Symantec Goes After Phishing

May 4th, 2006 · No Comments

Security software giant Symantec said Monday it will launch a service allowing businesses to Symantecreport phishing incidents or fraudulent web sites that try to steal personal information from online users, as it looks to crack down on one of the Internet’s biggest security problems. The Phish Report Network, as Symantec calls it, will let anyone alert the company about phishing emails, which the company will enter into a database of incidents. Symantec will then relay the reports to subscribers who sign up to pay for the data feeds.

Symantec hopes that by submitting data to the Phish Report Network, it will be convenient for companies because they can go to one location to see all the fraudulent URLs. The Network includes members such as RSA Security, eBay, PayPal, Google, and Wells Fargo. These companies contribute URLs they have identified as fraudulent. In turn, Symantec collects the data and distributes it to other network members who are subscribers. The subscribers use the data in their products and services to alert end users or filter access to fraudulent web sites, to better protect consumers and businesses, said Symantec.
