Thousands of international criminals working over the internet in ""virtual gangs"
are stealing millions of pounds from consumers and businesses in Britain, a senior computer security expert said on Tuesday.
"It’s the first time ever that organised crime can attack people in their own homes sitting at their computer systems," said Tony Neate, head of E-crime Liaison at the country’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca).
The agency was launched earlier this month as a national law enforcement unit modelled on the United States’ FBI and tasked with tackling organised crime.
Neate, formerly with Britain’s National Hi-Tech Crime Unit, told an audience at a computer security exhibition in London that criminals were using spy software secretly installed over the internet or by email on individuals’ computers to attack them "right in the heart of their own living rooms or bedrooms."
