Apple Airport and WiFi Network Security

This page offers some practical security tips for wireless networks based on Apple's Airport and the IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) standards. Executive summary: use only WPA or WPA2 securite modes and pick a strong passphrase.

The threats

Threat 1. WEP encryption can be broken fairly easily

WEP is the older security standard for Wi-Fi. At a 2005 Information Systems Security Association meeting,, presenters from the FBI demonstrated breaking a WEP network in three minutes, using the latest attack tools, all available on the Internet. Where possible WEP should be replaced by the newer, stronger WPA (see below).

Here are details on WEP's vulnerability, if you are interested. A 2001 paper by Scott Fluhrer, Itsik Mantin and Adi Shamir described new attacks on the RC4 cipher that is the basis for Airport and 802.11b Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security. Prof. Shamir states in an e-mail accompanying the release...802.11 Wireless Network (Airport) Security
