Network Security Disaster

The only thing which is certain in a computer network is a disaster. One such disaster occurred in 1999 when a website containing personal information about Canadian Air Miles loyalty card customers. This led to the compromise of nearly 50,000 consumers, since the website was unprotected. Justin Peltier of Detroit based Peltier Associates says that these kind of silly mistakes are common in a network environment.

He also adds that these mistakes are unavoidable in a complex network scenario, which makes life easy for a hacker. Although a lot of organizations have realized the importance of network security, many companies continue to pay a heavy price for security breaches in their networks. One such organization which suffered a massive security breach was CardSystems. The hacker was able to break in and gain access to 40 million customer information because the audit process was network oriented and not monitoring the vulnerabilities in the process.
