Enforce Data Security Rules

October 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

When asked at a recent hearing of the General Assembly’s finance committee why she didn’t come forth right away with details about the theft of a laptop containing confidential taxpayer information, state Commissioner of Revenue Services Pam Law testified that she was not really good with the press. "That’s not my style," she said.

But new facts about the theft that were made public at the hearing left the distinct impression that Ms. Law didn’t talk because she had something to hide. Among the surprises was news that the state-owned computer stolen from a revenue agency employee on Long Island last month also contained bank account information and routing numbers for more than 1,600 Connecticut businesses. Routing numbers are used to make wire money transfers from corporate bank accounts.
