The popularity of smart phones and other handheld devices such as the Blackberry that do almost
everything a computer can do, coupled with the rapidly expanding range of wireless access, means that the perimeter of an enterprise network can be almost anywhere on the planet. It also means that such a network now comprises an almost limitless variety of devices from multiple manufacturers, running every known operating system. Along with the blessings of limitless accessibility however, come a few curses.
At the top of the list are increased security risks, especially since employees often make little distinction between devices they personally own and devices owned by their employers. They play games, access instant messaging to connect with friends, shop on line, and do their banking on laptops supplied to them by employers, and store sensitive company information such as sales figures, budgets, and client lists on personal Blackberries.
