Auditing Home Computer Networks

October 21st, 2006 · No Comments

Security audits are often considered a big business practice and often include penetration testing file_explore.pngand vulnerability assessments. While the scale is different, home networks also require proper auditing. Globally speaking, home networks make up a large percentage of all networked computers. This group of computers is connected to the internet and an active target for hackers, identity thieves, and bot network attackers.

With high-speed internet becoming more and more common, poorly secured home computers have become a hacker’s paradise. One popular goal of a malicious hacker is to turn your computer into a distributed denial of service tool. Once enough computers are under an attacker’s control, he can remotely tell all of them to bombard a specific target on the internet, effectively kicking the target offline. Often distributed denial of service attacks are used by organized crime gangs to extort money from victims. Security Reference Guide > Auditing Home Computer Networks, Part 1
